My son has been looking for a new gaming laptop because he wants one that is more portable than his desktop. He asked me what to look for in a gaming laptop.

Here Is What To Look For In A Gaming Laptop

Here are some of the suggestions I gave to my son.

  • Performance: You want to be sure the performance of the laptop is top notch. Gaming will make your processor work hard and it must be able to keep up.
  • Graphics: Get the highest graphics quality and speed you can afford. Games use a lot of graphics and the faster your graphics, the faster your game will be.
  • Multitasking: You want a laptop that can handle multitasking.
  • Large screen: The larger the screen, the larger your game will look on the gaming laptop. 15″ is a good size that is large enough for gaming yet still small enough to be portable.
  • 6GB Memory: The minimum you want is 6GB, but get the most you can for what you can afford. You can never have too much memory.
  • Large hard drive: As with memory, larger is always better because games take up a lot of hard drive space. A minimum of 500GB is a good place to start.

A great feature of buying the HP Envy gaming laptop at Best Buy is free shipping on orders of $35 or more AND free store pickup. I like to use the free store pickup because I know that when I get there, my new gadget will be ready for me to pickup and I don’t need to waste any time.  (It usually takes at least 45 minutes for your order to be ready)

  • The Athlon 64 x2 is truly a high quality processor that finds itself wearing a lower price
tag because it is being rapidly replaced by quad core CPUs.
So more often than not hardware supply is aimed
at office user level and if an employees needs are greater tough, there pleas for better
equipment will be ignored. Homespun Organic Instruvenus Waspstrumental.

  • I have to agree that AMD laptops with A10 processors (which the FX is similar too, albeit a high end version of it) are pretty good for gaming at an affordable budget. It’s hard to get better without spending $1000 or more (or close to it) to get a laptop with a dedicated Geforce or Radeon graphics card.

That said, laptop FX APU’s or A10’s really only work well for gaming with 768p and 900p screens, they’re not really great with full-size 1080p laptop screens. I also agree with Kristine that an SSD is also a REALLY important thing to look for when considering a gaming laptop, as a laptop with a slow 5400rpm hard drive’s a lot less optimal than even a 7200rpm one.

If you don’t mind longer loading times though, a basic spinner hard drive isn’t completely bad. When I want a general purpose machine that can still run a few games at medium settings, I tend to look for laptops with A10 processors myself. Not for serious gaming though, obviously.

    • Very good points, Brian. As with any laptop, there isn’t always one answer because we all use them differently. Gaming for me may be different than gaming for you. And of course, there is always the “budget” which limits what so many of us can purchase. So, for even a serious gamer on a budget will have a completely different machine than a serious gamer with no budget.

  • Really? This is a thing? Giving bad tech advice for cash on a mom blog? This laptop is going to be absolutely rubbish at gaming. This blog post (and probably this entire blog) is nothing but detritus.

    • While I appreciate the compliment, I am not a mom blogger. I am a blogger who writes about technology and yes, I am also a mom. I gear my tech blog to women who have families, scrapbooker and those looking to use technology to live a healthier life. A mom blogger writes about their kids and parenting. Yes, my family is in my posts because they help test products, but the purpose of my blog is not to share my kid’s life, but to teach other women how to use technology to enhance their life. As far as bad tech advice? We have this laptop and my kids use it for gaming. I give advice based on my own testing. It has worked perfectly for us and therefore, I have no problem recommending this laptop to my readers. Thank you for stopping by.

  • I would like to add another requirement, and that is a SSD, especially if the HDD runs at 5400 RPM. A SSD will help with the multitasking and will boost games performance.
