Your Home Will Always Be At the Perfect Temp for You With Nest from Best Buy #BBYConnectedHome
This is a Best Buy sponsored post.
Imagine coming home on a very cold winter day, coming into the house and it’s warm and toasty. I’m sure your first thought is, “well if I want to keep my thermostat up high all day and throw money out the window, I can have a warm home.” But if you have the Nest Learning Thermostat from Best Buy, you can save money and have a warm home when you arrive.
Having a connected home means you control devices in your home from a phone, tablet or computer. With the Nest, you can control your thermostat when you are away, but the best part is that the Nest learns what you like and will begin to adjust the temperature of your home to your desires (after it spends a little time with you.)
The Backbone of a Connect Home
First, let’s take a step back for a moment before I tell you more about the Nest. A connected home needs a good router to run all the devices you have. The average home has 7 connected devices which includes mobile phones, tablets, printers, TVs, Nest and more.
Along with the Nest, Best Buy sent me a NETGEAR Nighthawk DST AC1900 Wireless-AC Gigabit Router with GeekSquad Included. The Nighthawk easily can handle 10+ devices running Netflix, etc.
- We noticed right away that our mobile phones were faster using the Nighthawk.
- In the past when we would watch Netflix or Hulu, the first 5 minutes were often pixelated and the sound wasn’t in sync with the video. We do not have that problem anymore.
The DST is a DeadSpot Terminator which you plug into a regular outlet in your home near an area where you have trouble getting WiFi. The DST will help bring WiFi to that deadspot in your home.
Why You Need a Deadspot Terminator
You may think a deadspot isn’t that important, but let me tell you a little story. We have a deadspot in our home which is my teenage daughter’s bedroom. Her iPhone has trouble staying connected, so every time it loses the connection, it switches to using our mobile data plan.
We were running out of data every month and we could not figure out why. It was costing us a lot of money in overage charges. After installing a deadspot terminator, we no longer have that problem and we are now using about a quarter of our data plan.
GeekSquad Included With NETGEAR Router
A router can be tricky to install because there are so many variations depending on your home, your devices, your Internet and TV services and much more. So having the GeekSquad included with this NETGEAR router is a life-saver.
The GeekSquad Protection gives you 24/7 service by phone or web for up to a year. If you are having problems connecting your router, call GeekSquad and they will walk you through it.
We didn’t have a problem connecting our NETGEAR router because we had a NETGEAR before, but I called GeekSquad just to be sure everything was up to par with our security settings. We had everything installed correctly. What a relief.
Nest Learning Thermostat
Now that you have router running and you have called GeekSquad to be sure everything is installed correctly, let’s talk about the Nest. Installing the Nest was not difficult. We read the directions and went to the website for further instructions. It took about 15 minutes from the time we finished reading the instructions until it was on the wall and running.
After it is installed, you download the Nest app from the App Store or Google Play store and follow the instructions to connect the app to the Nest. You can control the Nest from the thermostat or from your device.
Another benefit of the Nest is when I’m laying in bed and I am cold. This is what I see:
To the right of the lamp, that circle is the thermostat. It is far away. I don’t want to get out of bed to adjust the temperature. So, now I grab my phone and adjust it right from bed. I love having a connected home.
We have not gone on vacation since got the Nest, but when we do, we can put the Nest in “Away” mode and it will keep the house at an energy-efficient temperature. Before we come home, we can change it back to the regular mode and the temperature will be perfect when we walk in the door.
I’m anxious to see if we have a change in our energy bill this winter with the Nest. Many utility companies will give you a discount if you have the Nest (or to buy the Nest.) Check with your utility company before you buy one.
Utility companies do this because the Nest saves an average of 10-12% on heating bills and 15% on cooling bills. That is a great saving over a year!
SlingTV
SlingTV gives you the option to watch what you want on the device you want and whenever you want to watch it. The cost is $20/month and with the awesome NETGEAR router, you would have no problem streaming.
SlingTV is available on many TV and video players, Amazon FireTV, Roku, Xbox One, smartphones, tablets and computers. That is a lot of options.
If you are considering getting rid of your current cable service, SlingTV is a great alternative. They offer many channerls such as ESPN, A&E, TNT, HGTV and more.
