Barnes & Noble Nook Color, More Than an eBook Reader

Today, Barnes & Noble released an update to the Nook Color and it is obvious they are trying to compete with tablets. At a price of $249, that is a lot cheaper than the iPad or any other tablet available now.

NOOK Color

I have the first black and white Nook, which my daughter inherited when my husband and I both bought iPads. Did you know that some schools are letting kids bring in eBook readers to read in the classroom? I love that!!

Nook Color New Features

According to the Barnes & Noble website, the new update for the Nook Color adds apps, email, games, music, web browsing and you can still read books. So, the Nook Color has the following features:

  • WiFi only
  • 7 inch color screen
  • Access to apps such as Oprah Mobile, Epicurious, SpringPad, math learning, calendar, Quickoffice, Boingo, and more.
  • Game apps including Angry Birds, Uno, Flight Control, Solitaire and more.
  • Pandora built-in to listen to your favorite songs with a headphone.
  • Email built into the nook with all the features we are used to.
  • Nook Friends – Social Network in beta to connect with your friends on the Nook.
  • And… web browsing with Adobe Flash

All of that and it’s only $249. That is not a bad deal at all. And I forgot to mention that you can still read books, newspapers and magazines on the Nook Color.

NOOK Color

I have not seen one in person yet, but once I do, I’ll let you know more about the new Nook Color. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, I’m thinking this would be an awesome Mother’s Day present.

Let’s Talk about the Nook Color!

What do you think about the new features of the Barnes & Noble Nook Color? Will you buy one? Would a Nook Color replace a tablet?

  • I’ve always liked Barnes and Noble Nook and Kindles. Its good to know that schools are allowing kids to use e-readers so I guess this means all the students should own one. Kids these days have all started using tabs, can’t keep them away from the tabs when we parents use at home.

    • Our county is looking at going to either all tablets or laptops for the kids. Either the kids bring their own or if they can’t afford it, then the schools will help to provide them so everyone has one. I love that idea. Education is often the last to catch up to the technology.

      • Good to know that the schools will be financially helping some of the kids. Let’s hope that more schools across the world allow kids the freedom to use e-readers.

  • I seen it today at B & N and it looks VERY nice. I would love to buy my daughter one but she is only 6 and still deciding if she loves to read or not, lol. They all share my iPad right now…but the Nook looks very cool and is so much more than just an e reader like you said. With FLASH too? WOW! Cool…
OH My…I just read your other comment. I had no idea you could put the Nook app on your iPad, going to do that right now!

    • I don't have the color one, only the black and white. I'm not sure if you can read picture books on mine, but since I have an iPad too, I do have the Nook for kids installed on my iPad and my kids read those.

  • I have the b&w version too. Something happened to it though, and the left side of the screen has a fat line down it on the e-ink. So, you have to decipher what the missing letters or numbers are. Just got iPad 2 this week, so a new Nook is not in the cards.

  • Love my Nook Color. Not sure if it's a tablet replacement, as I couldn't imagine really typing on the keyboard, but it'd do in a pinch. Hope you get one for Mother's Day, Michele!

    • You are right. I hadn't thought about typing on it because it is so small. I have a hard time typing on the bw one. It is too big to hold and type with one hand, but too small to put it down and use to hands.

Let me know what you thought!!
