6 Tips For A Successful IT Career

Do you want to be successful in your IT career? Whether you are just starting out or have been in IT for years, these six tips will help you to be successful.
1. Be approachable and friendly on the job.
Being approachable and friendly means that people will talk to you and ask for advice or help. When future opportunities become available, people are more likely to recommend someone they have spoken to and liked. While you may be dealing with computers a lot of the time in IT, you still need to deal with the people using the computers.
2. Attend networking events.
When you attend networking events in the IT field, you will meet others who are in similar positions to yours. You can share problems and solutions.
When it comes to getting ahead, it helps to have a large network of people you know. When opportunities come up in other companies, knowing someone who already works there can help you out tremendously. People love getting personal recommendations for open positions.
3. Stay up-to-date on the latest technology.
You will need to know what the latest technology is and what is coming around the corner. If there is a new smart phone technology available and employees in your company will be using this new technology, you need to be sure it is compatible. Staying current with technology will help you solve problems.
4. Never stop growing.
Never stop adding new skills. The IT field changes very quickly and you need to stay ahead of the changes if possible. In addition to the usual skills, there are many softer skills that are needed in IT.
Not sure what those softer skills are or if you need to improve yours? Capella University is offering a free CEB IT Talent Assessment to give you a better idea of where you stand as it relates to the 12 softer skills needed to get ahead in IT.
5. Set career goals.
In order to get ahead, you need to know where you want to go. Otherwise it is like getting an assignment to write a new software program and not knowing who the end user will be. You need to know where you want to go if you have any chance of getting there.
Write your goals down and keep them close to you. Remind yourself often where you want to go. Capella University can help you find a path that will get you from where you are now to where you want to be.
6. Find a mentor in your field.
Once you know what your goal is, find someone who is in that position now. Get to know them and find out how they go to where they are. They can help steer you in the right direction.
If you want to stay successful in the IT field, you will need to stay ahead of the curve with new technology and skills.
