Every year Thanksgiving seems to get earlier and earlier in the year, doesn’t it? It seems like it was just Fourth of July. But anyways, enough with that. The only tradition we can count on is that Thanksgiving is different for us every year and will involve lots of gadgets for our geeky family. Since both sides of our family live about 3-4 hours from us, we are either having company or we are traveling.

If we travel, we always try to leave on Wednesday morning, right after work day rush hour and before Noon rush to get out of town. Very precise timing involved which means checking traffic often on my iPhone. Some years we make it and it takes us 3 hours to get to our destination and sometimes we have #iphonefail and it takes us 8 hours (seriously) to go 3 hours.

Thursday mornings are devoted to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade viewed on an HD TV only. We turn it on and sit around and chat skype, eat appetizer type of foods, surf the web while the kids play video games and drive us nuts. Oh and there is usually some cooking going on that involves those large objects in the kitchen that people who cook use. Jason will head to McDonald’s for breakfast if there is one open, otherwise, it’s cereal.

We shoot for eating around 4:00 pm. We do get off our gadgets long enough to eat and enjoy the company. We typically have turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green bean casserole, rolls and apple pie for dessert. (no gadgets involved, boring, huh?)

Do you call it stuffing or dressing? We say stuffing.

After dinner we usually get comfy, watch a movie and doze off early.

Friday morning Jason will head out to Best Buy for the hot gadget we need want. Black Friday is a geek’s dream event. It’s like a gadget white sale event. I will check prices online while he stands in line. We end up with a few items for the kids for Xmas (and something for us too).

We got married on November 26 (after meeting on AOL, told you we were a geeky family,) which was the Saturday after Thanksgiving in 1994. We try to get away for a dinner without kids, but not without gadgets, over the holiday weekend. This year will be married for 15 years and our Anniversary falls right on Thanksgiving. I think we will try to go out for dinner on Saturday night and then do some shopping.

Our plans vary, but we are always together with family and thankful for all we have. I enjoy hanging out at my parent’s house or my in-laws and spending time with family. I hope that our times together as a family will be what my kids remember.

Now, head on over to my good friend Hanging With Mrs. Cooper‘s blog and tell us about your Thanksgiving traditions. She’s giving away a gorgeous Path2 Peace basket and you could win a basket with your Thanksgiving tradition story. I’m sure that basket would be a fantastic place for me to hide all my gadgets and cords.

As a kid, we never had a lot of huge family gatherings. It was usually just our family of 5 plus my grandparents. It was always fun and we had our traditions, but I always wanted big family gatherings with tons of kids running around and lots of food. Well, I married into a family with huge family gatherings. They are interesting. It’s a group of people who are bound together by 2 people basically…usually the grandparents. During the rest of the year, we never see each other and barely talk. But we get together and it’s like old friends and like no time has past. I love that! I love knowing there are a group of people out there that will genuinely care if I don’t show up for a gathering…or at least ask where we are. It doesn’t really matter the size of your gathering, only that everyone should have one.

As you may have guessed…we are going to a family gathering today. It is at my husband’s Aunt (the sister of my FIL who passed away this past week). Many of the family are from New York and so they are having this get together today. The funeral is tomorrow morning and then we will all go back to our lives and will probably not see each other until the next wedding or funeral. There is always a need to gather when someone dies. I find it reassuring and comforting.

In today’s times though, I have to say I am much better about keeping up with people in between gatherings because of e-mail. I can type up one e-mail and send it to every friend and relative we have.

..that’s my thought for today!
