The Whatever Girls are hilarious to watch. Karrie (aka @Knitpurlgurl) turned me onto the Whatever Girls. Both Alexis & Jennifer were on the Today show today and discussed social networking. Watch this clip and let me know what you think…

How do you feel about the online social networking world? Are you addicted? I have met a lot of really great and really close friends online. It has been my lifeline since my oldest was born 13 years ago. I also have offline friends, but my online friends are just as important to me. I have met many of them in real life and it’s like we were friends for years. No strange awkward moments. We jump right in as if we were chatting online.
Being online has opened up my world. I have met women that I have a lot in common with that I never would have met before. I want to know about your online vs offline friendships.

This year I am not able to attend Blog World Expo or Sitscation in person, but that has not stopped me from participating in many of the events. The 3 tools I am using are:
1. Twitter. My TweetDeck is all decked out to catch the hashtags #bwe09 (Blog World Expo) and #sitscation (Sitscation) and #cbbwe (Collective Bias Blog World Expo) streams.

2. Whrrl. This is the best way to virtually attend the parties because you can see the pictures along with the notes from everyone attending. Search for the hashtags #bwe09, #sitscation & #cbbwe on Whrrl to find the stories.
3. mycontent.com is live streaming all of the keynotes and a few of the sessions from Blog World Expo.

This may not be as good as attending in person, but it definitely is beneficial. I am learning a lot from watching the keynotes and reading all the tweets coming out of all the sessions (and I can attend all the sessions at once). I have made quite a few contacts through Twitter by contacting those that are tweeting something that interests me and asking questions.
You may not be able to attend all of the conferences throughout the year, but don’t let that stop you from networking and learning from these conferences.
What have you learned from watching the tweets and following the stories from conferences you didn’t attend in person?

Facebook will finally offer usernames on June 13th at 12:01 am EDT. Up until now, our profiles included a number like this one:

But, no more. You will now be able to choose your own username. It will be on a first-come, first-serve basis starting at 12:01 am EDT on June 13, 2009 (this Saturday). You will be able to choose your username by going to Facebook’s Username page (which is now a countdown page). The username is available for your personal profile and any Facebook pages you administer.
Once you pick your username, your facebook profile will look like this:

Your username will have to be at least 5 characters long and can include, numbers, letters or a period. Once you choose your username, you will not be able to change it, so think very carefully about what you’d like to use and I would think of a back-up too, just in case your first choice is taken.
Once you choose your username, others will be able to search for your username on Facebook and in search engines like Google. That should make finding others easier if you use a username that others will recognize. Your username will also come with search privacy settings like your profile does.
Now, I have to decide if I want scrappinmichele or if I should use michele.mcgraw.
What will you choose for your username?

I have been really hooked on plurk lately. I could never really get into Twitter. It felt very one sided to me. Yes, you can twitter @ someone, but it most of the time I didn’t get a response to my questions. But with plurk, it’s sort of like IMing with a lot of people. I love the time line. You can see an overview here. The timeline is in the blue and my info is in the orange. You respond by clicking on the line and then a text box shows up and you respond.
You need to check it out…you can get a lot of friends to start by going to this
page and adding people as friends. There are a lot of friendly people there and so far, I’ve received NO spam!!!! Don’t forget to add me too….
