Fun Family Event: Hamster Derby at Petco

  • Google Buzz

HamsterBallLOGO_2009 We do not have hamsters and I have never been a big rodent fan, but I have to admit that watching a hamster derby sounds like a lot of fun. My 6 year old son would go nuts watching them roll around. I’m sure my 90 lb black lab would love it also, but we won’t go there.

This Saturday (October 3) at 2 p.m. at a PETCO store near you, you can participate in the Hamster Ball Derby. Last year more than 12,000 hamsters entered their ball and raced down the eight-foot tracks in heats of four to get to the finish line. And what did they get for their effort?

Winners at each store will receive the following prizes:

First-place:  A first-place medal and a Kaytee Forti Diet Pro Health Small Animal Starter Kit, complete with food, bedding, a treat and a chew
Second-place:  A second-place ribbon and a Super Pet Hamburger Crispy Combo Chew
Third-place:  A finalist ribbon and a Kaytee Hamster Single Honey Treat Stick

Before the race begins, there will be a brief lesson from a PETCO Companion Animal Specialist or store manager on how to keep your hamster healthy and happy. You’ll learn about the proper food to feed your hamster, the importance of fresh water and exercise, toys and understanding a hamsters nocturnal nature.

Check out the official PETCO Hamster Ball Derby page and get a 20% off coupon valid on derby day only

PETCO has also posted a YouTube video covering proper Hamster Ball Derby training techniques

With 1 dog and 2 cats in our house, we are always in need of pets supplies. I think we will try to schedule in picking up some pet food (at 20% off) and have a little fun watching the hamsters roll around. Sounds like a fabulous Saturday afternoon to me.

Let me know if you plan to go.

Project 365: Day 43

P1030102 This silly looking picture is our cat Lily laying next to me on the bed. She loves to push her back right up against me and stretch out. She is the silliest cat I know. We rescued her from one of those cat shelters at Petco. She had been in several other homes before ours. She was very friendly with people, but did NOT like our dog, Kelsey, who is a 90 lb black lab. AT first she hid away in the basement. She would not come out for anything. She then started to come up after a few weeks, but was peeing on everything…carpets, beds, clothing left on the floor, living room couch and we had just about had it. I did some research online because we really didn’t want to get rid of her, but I could not have her peeing all over my house. So we put aluminum foil on the living room furniture (cats hate the feel of it), put a 2nd kitty litter upstairs and started leaving water out in several places for her. She no longer pees on the living room furniture. Every once in a while she still pees on the rug in the main level powder room. I guess she doesn’t like my shade of pea green decor. She now will even get within about 3 feet of the dog. She can exist in the same room as the dog, but prefers the dog be elsewhere. She is a real sweetheart with the loudest purr.

I found out through my research that cats tend to pee on things when they are stressed. Often the stress is caused by another animal (Kelsey), not liking location or type of kitty litter or just the transition to a new home. Once I changed all 3 things we saw a decrease in the number of times she was peeing. I was really glad I didn’t send her away and gave her a chance because now she is part of the family and I miss her when she doesn’t jump on the bed at night to purr loudly next to me. And if Sami forgets to fill her kitty food, she lets me know. She wakes me up and then leads me downstairs and she does NOT give up until I’ve fed her. I told Sami I was going to put Lily in her room when she does that next time so Lily can wake Sami up to feed her.
