HarperCollins UK released Fragile Earth, which shows many of the transformations the earth has made due to both man-made and natural disasters.

Fragile Earth Visuals

The images on this app are amazing and makes it very easy to see the changes the earth has gone through by showing you before and after pictures. This app would be a great classroom tool because it’s so visual.

From the Fragile Earth press release:

There have been several times that I wished I could see outside or in the basement to check on the kids without having to get up every 5 minutes. As the weather gets warmer, my kids want to be outside all the time which is fantastic, BUT…. I still need to work. In comes the Y-Cam Knight SD wireless video security camera to the rescue.

The Y-cam comes with everything you need to set it up anywhere in your home. You can set it on a table or shelf or mount it from the ceiling. It is so easy to set up. I got it set up all by myself and just in time too. My husband and I were both sick one day and the kids wanted to be outside. It was awesome.

I decided not to mount it because I may move it around depending on how I want to use it. My kids like to have friends sleep over and they all want to sleep in the basement. I can put it in the basement and see what is going on without having to go down 2 flights of stairs every hour. If the kids are in the backyard this summer and I need to work, I’ll put the Y-cam in a back window. I love the versatility of the Y-cam wireless video camera.

Y-cam Features

Wireless

Infrared Night Vision

Both high quality video (640 x 480) & sound

Motion detection

Monitor from anywhere

Record video

microSD slot for local backup

Compatible with Windows, Mac & Linux

Mobile viewing of video & sound

Secure & compact

Easy to install

Sample Photos

In addition to all the features above, the picture is really good. Here are some sample photos from the Y-cam:

View of my front yard as seen through the iPhone app for the Y-cam camera.

Here is a photo I took at night so you can see the night vision capabilities.

I love how well you can see even when the room is pitch dark. I couldn’t see anything in this room with my own eyes.

The camera is also good when you are waiting for a delivery. I will often go to the door every time I hear a truck, but with the Y-cam, I just have the application open on my computer or iPhone and I can see whether it is my delivery.

What I love about the Y-cam

Easy to set-up

No more costs once it is set up

Quality video

Can view from anywhere (either from home or away from home)

Since I can use my iPhone to check on the Y-cam, I plan to use this when we go on vacation and leave our home in the care of house sitters or to be sure the animals are not destroying the house while we are gone. There are so many ways I plan to use the Y-cam.

Follow Y-cam on Facebook, Twitter & YouTube.

So, think about it… When you ask for recommendations, don’t you usually go to friends and not strangers? I know I do. So now you can see all the recommendations that your friends are making. It’s also a great way to see what your friends like when you need to buy them a gift.

Wikets Feed

Here is the Wikets recommendations feed from those I’m following (and mine too.)

Wikets lets you recommend both places and things and if you have a product with a bar code, scan the code to add the product.

When you make a recommendation, you can add comments and share immediately with your friends on Facebook and/or Twitter.

Wikets Wish Lists

You can create wish lists to keep track of your friends Wikets recommendations that you want to check out later. Below is my wish list for food (or restaurants.)

When looking at your Wikets feed, you can see it in two ways. The popular feed shows the Wikets recommendation that are the most popular.

The nearby feed will show the Wikets recommendations by your friends that are close to where you are now. So if you travel to Orlando, FL and your friends have gone before and added Wikets recommendations, you will see those recommendations in the nearby feed when you are in Orlando.

Wikets Profile

The people tab is where you can find people to follow. You may want to follow someone who knows a lot about a particular topic. For example, I write about technology, so if you want to see my Wikets tech recommendations, follow me. Below is my profile.

Earning Rewards

As you are adding recommendations and adding items to your wish list, you earn points. You also earn points when your others add your recommendations to their wish list or they buy an item you added to Wikets. You can turn those points in for Amazon gift cards.

Disclosure: I have tested Wikets in beta for a few months and I have received compensation in exchange for my participation in the beta. All opinions in this post are 100% my own. Promo Code for Wikets is for tracking for rewards.

Let’s Talk About Wikets!

First, go download Wikets from the App Store and when you register use the promo code, ScrapGeek. Recommend a few of your favorite places and products. What do you think about getting recommendations from your friends through Wikets?

With 4 kids in the house, I am always looking for ways to motivate my kids to do their chores, homework and personal hygiene without being asked 100 times. I know I sound like the adults in Charlie Brown when I repeat myself over and over and over again. I know that without motivation, there isn’t any reason for my kids to clean their room.

Marble Jar Rewards App

I want to teach my kids to work towards a goal. When I was introduced to the Marble Jar iPhone App, I thought it just might be what we need. My plan is to sit down with each of my kids and set some goals. I want them to set some personal goals and then together we will work on a plan for the tasks I want them to complete.

Then we will decide the reward and lay out the steps to get from planning to achieving the goal and getting the reward. Being able to set goals and achieve them is something that will help them in life.

Visualizing Your Goals

The Marble Jar App will give us a visual for reaching our goal. Being able to watch the virtual jar fill up with marbles will give my kids (especially the younger ones) a good idea of how close they are to reaching their goal.

Sometimes, a goal can seem to far away and we often forget how far we have come. Being able to see how many marbles are in the jar already is so much better than just saying, “but look how far you’ve come” when my kids are frustrated.

So we will spend the next few weeks filling our virtual jar with virtual marbles and trying to achieve our goals.

Disclosure: In exchange for this series of posts, I am being compensated by Marble Jar. All opinions are 100% my own.

How do you motivate your kids?

Today’s Daily Geek Find is the Google+ iPhone App. This is the only post you will see about Google+ from me because I’m kind of sick of hearing about it. Everyone has a Google+ post and everyone is an expert.

Honestly, I’m not sure why I’m so resistant to Google+. Usually I love new social networks. Maybe it’s because it’s summer and I’d rather be at the beach than learning how to use Google+.

Anyways, you can get the Google+ iPhone App at the Apple App Store. It is real simple to use and has as much white space as Google+ does (I’m not a big fan of white space as you can see from my blog…I feel the need to cover all space with color and stuff.)

Google+ iPhone App

Here is what it looks like on the iPhone. I know the Droid already has an app, but I haven’t seen it yet. Maybe I will like it better now that they have a Google+ iPhone App. That may have been what was missing for me.

Have you used Whrrl yet? @Scobleizer describes Whrrl as “the next twitter.”

I have been using Whrrl for a few months now and I’ve fallen in love with it. It helps me pull all of my favorite activities into one nice neat package — digital scrapbooking, blogging, gadgets, iPhone, friends, picture taking and most importantly, storytelling. I have had this post in the works for a few weeks now and I thought today was the perfect day to finish and post it since Whrrl just released version 2.2 for the iPhone. (Which I am in love with, especially the continuous timeline of your stories.”)

Whrrl 2.2 iPhone App

I started using Whrrl to keep track of all the places and picture I take along the way. It was a great way to jot down notes about activities and the pictures that went along with that. Later, when I would go to scrapbook the pictures, I could go back to the Whrrl story and all my notes are in one place. Whrrl has become much more than a storytelling app for me. I keep a lot of very important information in my Whrrl. Many of them are set to private so that only I can see the story which makes it the perfect tool for me.

1. Tracking my workouts. I’ve started training for a 5k in October. I have the Nike+ app on my iPhone 3GS so every time I run, I set the Whrrl place to “Running” and I take a picture of my legs (just for fun) and a screen print of the final stats of my run. Every time I go to run again and set the place, my previous runs are easily accessible and I can see what my stats were from my last run.

My Running Whrrl Story

2. Birthday/Christmas/Any Occasion present list. Whenever we are at Target, my kids always point out all the toys they want and I think I’m going to remember. When I get to Target to shop for their birthday, I can’t remember anything they showed me. This summer, I created a private Whrrl story titled, Megan’s Birthday List and the place was Target and I took pictures of all of the things she showed me. When I went back to Target to shop, I set my place as Target and the list showed up in my previous stories from that location. And the pictures were a huge help.

3. Remembering where that perfect shoe/dress is located. You are shopping at the mall for the perfect little black dress. Sounds easy, right? Wrong! There are thousands of styles of the little black dress and after shopping for several hours they all look the same and you can’t remember which ones you saw when you first got there. That is where Whrrl can help. Create a story with the mall as your location. For each dress that you find and you really like, take a picture of the dress (and price tag) and in the caption, write down the store and a quick note of the location in the store. At the end of your shopping trip, you have a slideshow of all the perfect little black dresses and you can think about which one is really perfect for you and you have a note of where it is located.

4. Help to locate your car in a parking lot. When we went to Orlando in June, I took my 4 kids with me and we met my husband who was already there for business. He is really good about remember where the car is. I am not! So I took a picture of the aisle with the location letter and floor and I took a picture of where the car is. I used Dulles Parking Garage as the location. When we returned, I changed my location to Dulles Parking Garage and my last story was right there with the location of my car. Jason was even impressed that we didn’t have to search the garage for the car. I also added a note of where I put my ticket so I could easily find it too.

5. Shopping list of items you always buy at a particular store. Whenever I go to Target for my monthly necessities shopping, I buy a lot of the same items. You can take pictures of all the items (add your partner to the story), and add a place such as “Target – Month” and each month when you go shopping, you pull up the story and you have a list with pictures. Your significant other can do the shopping for you also.

6. Recipes. I’ve added “Kitchen” as a location for my Whrrl stories. When I make something that I’d like to remember or that I’d like my husband to be able to make too, I make a step by step story of the recipe with pictures and notes. It also is good when you can’t remember what was in that one recipe and you are at the grocery store. Just search on kitchen and pull it up.

7. Leave a little note for someone. I haven’t tried this yet, but I think it would be fun. Imagine you have a place you like to hang out with a fellow Whrrl friend. Add the place to Whrrl and the next time they are there, they will see the story come up with your note if they create a Whrrl story at the same location. You need to be sure they are a Whrrl member and they use it often. Get them addicted too!

8. Restaurant reviews. Whenever we go to a restaurant now, I like to add pictures of what we all ate and make notes of whether it was good or not. I have taken pictures of the item on the menu also. The next time I go to that same restaurant I can check and see whether the food was good and what we all ate.
