We have been changing our diet slowly to include healthier options and that includes dairy. There are a lot of healthy dairy choices. We always have low-fat cheese sticks and yogurt in the house for a dairy snack. And having skim milk with your cereal in the morning is yummy!! It’s important to me that my growing kids eat dairy on a daily basis.

Safeway Shopping Trip

We were out running errands with the whole family and it was a beautiful day. We all had the urge to cook out. To shop for the ingredients, we all headed to Safeway. Shopping with the whole family is not my first choice because we come home with a lot more food than we need. We did manage to successfully buy the meats, bread, snacks and ingredients for the pasta salad.

Here is our full shopping trip for feta cheese (dairy) and all the other yummy cook out food.

When we got home, I prepared the Feta Pasta Salad and my husband prepared the meat and did the grilling. That’s the way we prepare meals where we grill out. I do the inside work and he does the outside cooking. The kids will set the table outside. The kids are usually playing on the swingset or in the yard while we are preparing.

Any Veggie Feta Pasta Salad Recipe

Ingredients:

• Feta Cheese (You could substitute your favorite cheese for this. I’ve used cheddar and Co-Jack cheese too. I use lo-fat cheeses.)
• Any type of small pasta (I prefer whole wheat pasta to make this a healthier meal)
• Any Veggie (Anything you have in the fridge or that is in season.)
• Black Olives
• Italian Dressing (I buy the Zesty flavor)

Add the olives, veggies and feta cheese to a large bowl. Pour in about 1/3rd of dressing bottle and mix to marinade. Let that sit while you cook the pasta. When pasta is cooked, drain and let it cool before you add the feta and veggies. Once cool, add the marinated ingredients. Taste to see if needs more Italian Dressing. Serve cold. My kids like to add Parmesan cheese to the pasta when I serve it.

When I prepare the pasta salad, I always make a lot so we will have leftovers. If you add chicken to the pasta salad, you have a full meal with a meat, dairy, carbs and veggies all in one bowl. I serve that to my kids for lunch. They enjoy eating it outside on a gorgeous day.

How to Make a Dog Collar Charm to Share

1. Head to the Dog Collar Charm website.

Sharing the Dog Collar Charm

That’s it! You have just customized a dog collar charm. I ordered 3 dog collar charms and it took about a week to receive the dog collar charms. I ordered one extra for my neighbor and another for my Mom.

I used a picture from my neighbor and my Mom’s Facebook pages to create the dog charm gifts. The charms looked the same as the one I ordered for my dog which I used the original picture. The background color on the charm shows through the picture which is ok with a white background, but not on a pink and orange background.

I brought the gift to my neighbor and she thought the dog charm collar would make a better key chain than a charm for her dog. Her dog is very small and the charm would be too heavy on his collar. She also wondered why her dog would want to wear a picture of himself.

The other dog charm was supposed to be a gift to my parents. I had created a charm with a picture of their dog that had passed away and I thought they could put it on the dog’s brother. My parents have both the mother and the brother of the dog that passed away. But I’m not happy with the charm. I used a pink background because she was a female dog, but the background shows through and it makes the German Shepherd look like she has a pink coloring to her. I wasn’t happy with it, so I chose not to send it out right away.

The process of ordering and making a customized dog charm was easy.

How to Make a Dog Collar Charm

1. Head to the Dog Collar Charm website.

2. Click on Start Now to get the Upload Picture screen. There needs to be more guidelines on this page. I want to know if certain colors will work better or doesn’t that matter. Anything that will help me choose the perfect picture for the dog collar charm.

3. Click on “Choose File,” find your picture and then Upload Now. this screen will pop up.

4. Click on ok to go to the next step in making your customized dog charm. Here you can zoom in, adjust the brightness or move the focus of the picture. This is not the actual charm I made. (picture from original purchase were all corrupted and I can’t find the original picture.)

6. The next step will take you to your final order page. You can change the quantity here or continue to make more charms. Be sure that if you change the quantity that your final receipt shows the quantity you ordered.

That’s it! You have just customized a dog collar charm. I ordered 3 dog collar charms and it took about a week to receive the dog collar charms. The process of ordering is easy, but as I mentioned above, there are a few places where there needs to be a better explanation.

Here is a close up of the charm of my dog when she was a puppy. She is now 10 years old.

The dog collar charm feels kind of heavy to put on a collar. I am not very pleased with the quality of the charm either. Too much of the color from the background shows through. My dog has an orange tint to her and she is a black lab with a hint of brown. I promise there is no orange in her fur.

I also decided that I didn’t want to put the charm on my dog and I’m going to use it as a key chain. That really made more sense to me than putting a picture of my dog on my dog.

Justin Bieber Fan?

I was the mom who would turn the Justin Bieber songs off in the car. My daughters could listen to their headphones if they wanted to hear him. I really could not stand to listen to him. So I was dreading the movie. But I did it.

I saw a side of the music industry that I had imagined, but had not seen. I saw the Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers movies and neither one shared the struggles. Justin Bieber didn’t just become an overnight success. He worked really hard to get where he is.

No, he didn’t spend decades playing in smokey bars, but instead he spent a year traveling around from radio station to radio station playing his acoustic guitar and singing for any DJ who would listen. He was going to get his music on the radio if it meant doing it station by station.

Justin Bieber & Social Media

Justin Bieber had something on his side that decades of artists didn’t have in the past… Social Media! I didn’t realize the huge part that Twitter played in getting Justin Bieber (Twitter link) to the place he is now. It was just another example of the power of social media. It puts the power back in our hands. If we (i.e. starstruck girls) want to hear Justin Bieber, they are not going to let a DJ in a radio station refuse to play him because the DJ thinks Justin is some kid with a high voice.

Social Media alone will not do it. Justin Bieber also has something that you need in order to be successful. He has determination. Maybe some of it was because he was so young and naive and therefore didn’t know that it should be hard. He just knew what he wanted and he went after it.

Justin Bieber Has Talent

I admit that I often assume that the cute kids that the girls are swooning over are lip syncing and have no talent. It was clear from watching this movie that he has talent. He’s been playing the drums since he was really young, like 2 years young. He plays the guitar, drums, piano, trumpet and a few more instruments that I don’t recall.

Justin Bieber Has Family

The one thing that I really enjoyed was listening to his family talk about Justin. He was raised by a young single mom and had the support of his grandparents. Even after he had become a success, he had to clean his room before going out with his friends. His is very close to his mom and grandparents. His management team and crew all seem to really care about him. Everyone treated him with respect, but he was also still a kid who needed guidance, structure and rules. He seemed to have all three.

Justin Bieber has Fans

Justin knows very well how he got to the place he is. It wasn’t because a record producer decided to make him a teen pop star. It was because his fans wanted to hear him. He and his crew give back to the fans. They pull fans from the concerts and put them in the front few rows. They go into the town and look for kids who don’t have tickets and give them tickets. It was very heartwarming to watch.

This movie showed all sides of Justin Bieber and the movie industry including the tough parts. He had moments where all he wanted was to be a “regular’ kid. At the same time, he never wants to disappoint his fans. He struggles with balancing being a 16 year old boy and a business. I can’t imagine that. I struggle with being a mom and having a small business. It’s not easy.

There were times when he’d break down and cry. He’s human. I thought that was very important for my girls to see. These young kids are put on pedestals and it’s very difficult to live to the super human standards we think they possess.

Hold Your Judgement

I had a lot of people joke about how they felt sorry for me that I was taking my girls to see the Justin Bieber movie, but seriously, hold your judgment. See the movie. I enjoyed it a lot. No, I loved it!

Is this movie the real story or what they want us to think the story is? That I can’t answer. I do know that I saw a different side of Justin Bieber. I do think he is going to be around a lot longer than I thought. Who thought Madonna would still be making music today? You can’t tell me that our parents weren’t sick of hearing, “Like a Virgin.”

Justin Bieber in 3D

We saw the Justin Bieber Never Say Never movie in 3D. The new 3D is nothing like the old paper glasses 3D movies. I don’t feel sick to my stomach and the 3D really looks 3D. These concert movies are really awesome in 3D. It’s one of the times where I think the 3D adds to the experience. It does make you feel like you are there.

If your daughters want to see the movie, go with them. If you do not have daughters, go see it or when it comes out in video, rent it. I do think that it’s a movie worth a watch. I’m glad that I saw it.

Remember…Never Say Never!! If a kid from a small town in Canada can sell out a stadium in a few years, you never know what else can happen!! And if Justin Bieber can teach me a lesson, well…you never know!

UPDATED: I just downloaded the album from iTunes for Never Say Never. Another one of those,” I swore I’d never…”, but I’m listening to it now.

Preparing For Crafts

When we decide to make crafts, I will usually head to Wal-Mart to buy a few main supplies that I do not have, but I always have stickers. I added “Valentine Crafts” to my shopping list and headed to Wal-Mart.

I decide to buy the black Elmer’s Tri-fold Display board. I think the black would make an awesome backdrop for the pinks, reds and glitter that go so well for Valentine’s Day. I also wanted us all to take a section and decorate it. Using the large Elmer’s Tri-Fold Display board will give us lots of room. I also bought a package of

If I want my kids to participate in a craft, I’ve found I need to make it very simple and I need to just let them do what they want. They get too frustrated if I try to tell them what to do. Plus it’s more fun letting them explore their own creativity.

Creating Huge Valentine’s Cards

We gather all the materials from my scrapbooking supplies plus the few things I bought and lay it all out on the floor so we can all work together.

We start with the front of the card. I used this opportunity to practice some spelling by having the kids help me pick out the stencil letters that we would need to make the front of the card.

There we go! Stenciled letters traced with glitter pens. We had a really hard time finding something that would write on the black background. I couldn’t find anything at Wal-Mart that I knew would show up on the black, so I didn’t buy anything. I had some scrapbooking pens that we tested and finally found 3 that worked.

Tri-Fold Display Board Sections

Next, we split the inside of the Tri-Fold Display board into separate sections for each of us. I got the large center section, the girls got the left and the boys got the right. I then further split the kid’s sections so everyone knew exactly where their section was and no one would fight.

We each searched through my Valentine’s Day and family stickers to make our section of the card. The kids really had fun looking for stickers and loading up their section with lots of stickers. I had to hold my tongue. I really wanted to tell them not to just haphazardly add stickers, but I wanted them to create it themselves so I didn’t.

We added small envelopes to the board and we each wrote little notes and stuffed them in the envelopes. Little treasures for Dad to find. It was really interesting watching them decide which stickers to put on the card. They often picked things that reminded them of their relationship with Dad. Like my daughter used a sticker with a princess because Dad calls her princess she said.

We all added our names to our sections and then we were done. Some of us chose to keep our section free of “clutter.” It was their own choice how to decorate it.

Our Family Valentine Card

This is the front of our card. The bottlecaps on the bottom have letters on them that read, “We Love You.” You open up the card and this is what you see:

It doesn’t show up at all, but there are some word written in glitter pen in each section. This is a true hodge podge of the relationships we each have with my husband. Each sticker or saying was chosen for a reason. It all reminds us of him. I think it’s an awesome way to show Dad how much we love him.

Grocery Shopping Preparation

A typical shopping trip for me starts with the list. I keep a running list on the kitchen counter and the whole family will write down anything hey run out of (food, shampoo, pencils, anything.) Then about once per week, either Jason or I will head to the grocery store. We prefer Wal-Mart, but it is a bit further so sometimes we head to Giant which is right in the neighborhood. Today, I went to Wal-Mart. I can buy all the necessities and food in one trip which saves me a lot of time.

I check the pantry and fridge for any other items we are low on and write them on my list. Depending on time, sometimes I just write down the items that we don’t buy often and our usual items (bread, milk, lunch meat, etc.) I do not write down.

Grocery Shopping Strategy

When I shop at Wal-Mart, I start by buying the non-food items first. Then I head to the food starting with the items that won’t spoil. Last I buy dairy and frozen items.

My Lunch Strategy

I need to stock up on my frozen lunch items. I am making lunch for only one, so I want it to be easy to prepare. Purchasing frozen meals is the easiest for me and helps me stay on track with my healthy lifestyle (trying real hard.) If I don’t have one in the house, I end up snacking on junk food all day.

There are a lot of choices for frozen lunch at Wal-Mart. One whole side of the frozen food aisle is the frozen meals.

I make my frozen meal decision based on the sales that day. I prefer the pasta or chicken meals so I look for those within the different brands. I’m not usually brand specific. There are a few meals that I really like in a particular brand, but if another one is on sale, I will usually go for the sale item.

I’m going for the new Steam Fresh Lean Cuisine meals. The Asiago Cheese Tortellini looks really yummy. I discovered they have the same flavor in a larger size bag. I will buy that if I like the taste of this. Would make a good go to meal to have on the busy after school activity days.

Just For Me Treat

Every afternoon, I treat myself to what I call my “Just for Me” treat. I buy something that is around 100 calories and I don’t share. It is usually a chocolate treat. I will look at the sale prices, but if I find something that looks yummy and fits into the 100 calorie range I set for myself, then I’ll buy it regardless of the cost.

Once again, there are a lot of choices in the lower calories frozen treat section.

One of my favorite picks is the Skinny Cow sandwiches in the peanut butter flavor, but Wal-Mart doesn’t have those today. So instead, I find this treat. The name, Chocolate Truffle makes it sound yummy, so I’m going to give it a try.

Grocery Shopping Complete

I check my list one last time to be sure I have everything and head to the check out. This is the part of grocery shopping I don’t like. Unloading, paying, loading up the car and then unloading the car and putting the groceries away.

My Daily Lunch

The Lean Cuisine Asiago Cheese Tortellini Steam Fresh meal I bought is new to me. I need to be sure I prepare it correctly.

You prepare it right in the bag. It has a spot for the steam to escape.

Put it in the microwave for 5 minutes and it should be done. I created a quick video that shows what happens to the package during and after you cook it. I found it interesting.

And when you open the package this is what it looks like.

Then I put it in the bowl. The clean up is real easy too. I just have the bag, bowl and fork.

It tasted really good. The tortellini and veggies didn’t get too mushy. It had good flavor, but wasn’t too spicy.

Enjoy My Treat

Around 2:00 pm every afternoon, I enjoy a sweet treat. I try to find sweet treats that are around 100 calories and no more 150 calories. Today, I’m trying the Skinny Cow Chocolate Truffle. Sounds really yummy.

These bars are 100 calories so it’s perfect for my snack. I like that there are 6 of them in this box. That way if I want to share with the family, I can. It is a nice size treat too.

Did I mention that I love the Skinny Cow on the packages?

MMMM!!! It tastes even better than it looks. The chocolate melts in your mouth the way I think a truffle should.

And that is my typical grocery shopping, my daily lunch and my “just for me” treat.

Get Creative With Elmer’s Tr-Fold Display Board originally posted at Scraps of My Geek Life.

I decided to go to the Super Wal-Mart so I could pick up a few groceries too. First, I had to decide which platform. We have PS3, Xbox and Wii. There are so many choices out there, so I usually just head to the store and see what they have rather than research the games before I go.

I spent about 10 minutes just looking at all the different types of games for the 3 platforms. My son really likes war type of games and it looked like the Xbox had quite a few choices in that type of game and he can play the Xbox in his room any time, so I decided to narrow it down to Xbox. (He would have to be sure no one else is playing or watching TV if I bought it for PS3 or Wii.)

There were Xbox games in two different locations (in the glass case and out of the glass case). I’m not sure what the different was between the two. I know that I try real hard NOT to buy a game in the glass case because I really do not like having to find someone to open the case and then pay for it back by the electronics. I will leave the store and go elsewhere if I can’t easily find someone to help me.

I found a few games that looked interesting, so I went to their website and read more about the game and searched google to see if I could find any reviews. The first game I had looked at was the 5th in a series and I didn’t think he has the first 4 and it was rated M, so I decided not to get that one.

The next game I looked at was rated T for Teen and my son is 14 so it passed that test. I use the ratings as a guideline when I don’t know anything about a game. If there is a game my kids want and the rating is above what they are, I will do some research and talk with friends and neighbors who have played the game and make a decision based on my own findings rather than the rating it was given.

The Darkvoid game sounds like it would be something my son would like. It is for Xbox and rated T, so Darkvoid it is. He will be pleasantly surprised I’m sure.

This was a fairly easy shopping trip. I found the selection was fantastic. There were a lot of games for all 3 platforms and the variety of games was really good too.

I like shopping at this Wal-Mart for video game stuff because the aisles are big and there is always a really great selection of video games and electronics.
