Yes, I said it! I did enjoy getting swag. Who doesn’t? But before you banish me to Freeloader’s Hell, let me explain why.
My husband is a professional trade show and convention director. He attends trade shows nearly on a monthly basis. Every time he comes home, the kids and I can’t wait to see what swag he has brought back. It’s mostly a lot of hats, t-shirts, pens and things that light up in bright colors. Although, he sometimes gets a few nice “gifts” that are really cool like cameras, martini glasses or even crystal. I always ask him the same questions, “Why do your vendors and exhibitors give all this stuff away?” and he responds, “because they’re effective tokens of appreciation for our business, or they want us to try them out and ultimately, it works.”
Companies want you to create a buzz about their product and what better way than to give it to you for free. Throughout his 20+ years of trade show experience, my husband has seen that giving out free product samples or giving away anything, works well to energize and motivate attendees to participate. It creates openings for establishing new relationships and helps to test market products/services with potential buyers and as well as to get positive reviews from influencers (bloggers, press, etc.)
People LOVE free stuff. If you want more people to come to your booth, give them something for free. If you want them to come to your party, give away a cool swag bag. Our blogger industry is not any different than any other industry. We ALL love to get free stuff, not just women/moms. It’s human nature.
Look around you! Costco has freebies. The grocery store has freebies. My mailman brings freebie samples. The Sunday newspaper has freebies. Target has “buy one, get one free” sales.
Giving away freebies is how they get us to try their product and tell all of our friends and buy more. We all know that nothing is really free. They are expecting (or at least hoping) that you will like their product and recommend it. And if you don’t like it, maybe you will let them know what they can do to improve it.
There are always those who behave like beasts instead of adults when something is given for free. It is disgusting, but let’s not let those few disgrace all who attended BlogHer. The majority of us were not at BlogHer JUST for the swag; however, we did enjoy getting some samples and maybe even a cool electronic freebie. The majority of us did NOT throw a fit when we didn’t get a swag bag. The majority of us did NOT steal a swag bag.
We want to be taken seriously as bloggers and treated with respect. The PR/marketing reps from the sponsoring companies who participated at BlogHer are treating us as they do all other industry trade show attendees. They are establishing new relationships and opening up the lines of communication with a gesture…swag.

First, the pictures..
Now, I’m just going to get right to the surprises…
Everyone was so nice!
I was scared to death to go because, well, we’ve all heard the stories. I didn’t meet one person who was mean to me or even gave me the cold shoulder. There were many that I really wanted to meet, but I was nervous. Not because I consider them celebrities, but because I respect them. Every one of them took a moment to shake my hand, exchange cards and chat. Not everyone knew who I was, but they still took a moment to find out who I was.
My feet hurt a LOT!
I have blisters in places I didn’t know I could get blisters. You rarely get a moment to sit down (even in the sessions, but that’s another blog post) so be sure you have comfy shoes. I’m still soaking my feet and I can not put on my running shoes because it feels like I’m stepping on needles.
It’s not all about the swag!
Everyone wants to meet their fellow bloggers and network and see what they look like outside a 1/2 inch box. And yes, have fun! Who said you can’t network, learn and have fun at the same time?
I did learn a LOT!
I learned more from my fellow bloggers than I did from my sessions. Some of the sessions were awesome, but the discussions that came out of the sessions were more valuable to me.
You need to take a break!
Go outside, get some sun and feel the fresh air. My hotel was about .5 mile from the conference hotel, so I was forced outside several times a day. I chose to walk the .5 mile during the day, but at night, when I was alone, I took a cab. It was fantastic to walk through the Chicago streets and take in the atmosphere. If you can fit in a quick nap or a bath, do so!
You won’t have time to eat. Bring a few healthy snacks for the hotel room.
I spent so much time talking and listening at all the parties and I rarely had time to eat. I was so worried about overeating, but it was really the opposite. I had to remind myself to eat.
It’s not all about the drinking!
Yes, we had drinks and I’m sure there were some who drank too much, but the parties were more about connecting and enjoying ourselves.
We are all more alike than we probably thought (or at least I thought).
We all struggle with the work/life balance and insecurities. We come from all parts of the world, but we’re not so different.
I had a really good time and I learned a lot and made some really good connections. It was definitely worth the trip and I already signed up for BlogHer 2010 in New York City. More BlogHer posts to come.
I woke up this morning thinking I was going to rush down to my computer, upload all my pictures and write my post BlogHer post because that’s what everyone does, right? I told my kids they needed to be good and leave me alone so I could work. I settled them down with the TV and breakfast and got on my computer. One of the first things I saw was a twitter update from MckMama.
It brought me to tears and not really for the reason you think. Yes, I’m very sad for Stellan, but it made me think about what I just did. I spent the last 4 days away from my kids and husband and no, I didn’t really miss them too much. I deserve and needed the break and they needed the time with Daddy. It’s good for us all to get a break once in a while. But now that I’m home, I pushed them away so that I could work. I felt compelled to get my post BlogHer post up immediately because that’s what we do!
MckMama’s tweet was like a shot of reality for me. I do this so that I can stay at home with my kids, yet often I push them away so I can blog. I know that there is never a right answer for striking that perfect balance between family and work. Today, the right answer is for me to forget the blog post and the pics and getting the thank you’s out immediately and instead to go sit on the couch with my 4 kids and watch a movie and just be Mom.
If you want to find me, look on the couch where I’ll be most of the day catching up with my babes, thinking a lot about Stellan (and crying) and hoping that MckMama gets to sit on her couch with her 4 babes and catch up very soon.
