Where Does Our Imagination Go?

Do we lose our imagination as adults or are we just afraid to let it soar? I hope we are just afraid to let it soar because that means if I let myself think freely, all that great imagination I had as a kid will come flowing back to me.

Childhood Imagination

Here is a picture of me when I was about 4 with fake braids in my hair at my Grandparents house. I hope that little girl’s imagination is still alive inside my adult head.

I remember spending days during the summer creating forts in our backyard. We create floor plans out of anything we could find…sticks, stones, leaves, toys… Those floor plans were our houses. My mom would never let us have long hair (must be why it’s always long now), so we would put pants on our heads and the legs would be our long  pony tails.

The Costume Trunk Book

We never worried about looking silly. It was a lot of fun and that was all we cared about. I hadn’t thought about all the imaginative games I played as a kid until I read The Costume Trunk Book (affiliate link) by Bob Fuller.

I was reading the book to my daughter and her friend and I could see their eyes light up as they thought about all the costumes they could play with. With all of the technology that is available today, putting on a costume and pretending you are something or someone else is still the best fun I know.

My kids have 2 huge boxes in our basement filled with old Halloween costumes, dance costumes and they will often skip the Rock Band and dress up as a princess, Scooby Doo, a pirate or maybe even a mom blogger. I hope to keep their imagination alive!
