Almost 14 years ago, I decided to take a leave of absence for 6 months to stay home with my first born. I never went back. It was not an easy decision to stay home. I knew that I was (at least temporarily) giving up having daily contact with adults and my current career path. What I was gaining though was much more important to me….watching my son grow up daily.
The Seed Was Planted
I am not the kind of person who can easily just sit and do nothing. I always have projects or something going on in my life. Shortly after I decided to stay home, a seed was planted and it wasn’t until recently that I realized the significance of that seed. I joined F.E.M.A.L.E. (Formerly Employed Mothers At the Leading Edge or now known as Mothers & More).Very quickly, I became involved on a national level as the Director of Internet Services. I connected women across the nation with similar hobbies, circumstances or interests using email and chatrooms on AOL. I loved doing that because I met so many different women and found so many had a lot in common with me and many of the friendships that were made back then are still going strong today.
Fast forward several moves, 3 more kids and 14 years to today. As I was reading the SEED story, I realized that my seed for my current entrepreneurial endeavors was planted long ago. I was essentially involved with social media in it’s infancy. I knew when I started to tweet and facebook and connect that it felt familiar and it felt right. I didn’t realize why until I was reading the Seed story.
In the last 14 years, I have tried many other business including selling scrapbooking supplies, selling odd stuff on eBay, web design, personal trainer and many others. None of them felt right until I found social media and started my blog. The reason I believe in the power of social media is because it has been a huge part of my life for so long and a large majority of my friendships and connections have been made over the internet with people who live miles away from me.
The Seed Blossomed
As I was reading how the founders of Seed want to improve our lives with their products, I realize that our goals are similar. I want to show others that technology and social media do not have to be cold and scary, but can improve our lives. We can start and nurture friendships, maintain family ties, learn, grown, share and even start a business.
Thank you Seed for showing me the seed that was planted many years ago and how it blossomed into a business I am proud of and love doing every day.
This post is my contest entry for the Seeds of Inspiration BlogHer 10 contest at Hip As I Wanna Be and sponsored by Seed.
