Healthy Breakfast Options for Children

This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series Healthy Breakfast Choices

Do your children have a healthy breakfast every morning? I’m a big stickler for the healthy breakfast. I know that if your day starts out with a good breakfast, it can be the difference between a good or bad day. I have witnessed it in my own children.

Convenient And Healthy Breakfast

But mornings are also very hectic in my house. Getting 4 kids off to school every morning with a healthy breakfast isn’t always easy. I was happy to see that some of the cereals that my kids love are also healthy. Personally, I could eat cereal for every meal (especially if it is cinnamon flavored.)

General Mills conducted a survey of DC area parents to find out more about their children’s eating habits. Here are some of the interesting statistics that came out of the survey:

  • 97% agree that it’s important for their children to eat breakfast
  • 88% agree that cereal is a healthy option

And what are parents looking for in a cereal?

  • 81% said good flavor is important
  • 60% want a breakfast with vitamins and minerals
  • 59% look for convenient options
  • 40% want a breakfast option that is low in fat
  • 24% look for a breakfast with at least 8 grams of whole wheat

Those all sound like what I look for in a healthy breakfast option. I need a convenient AND healthy breakfast or I won’t buy it.

Cereal As a Healthy Breakfast

Here is a good video that explains some of the benefits of cereal as a healthy breakfast choice.

I received the gift pack shown above in the picture and my kids and I tried the cereal. The cinnamon Cheerios and Reese’s Puffs were my favorite. I am going to buy the Reese’s Puffs to eat when I have my Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup cravings. We eat a lot of cereal as a snack in our house too.
