No, an AMD Fusion Chip is not a new potato chip (although that is an awesome name for a chip.) The AMD Fusion Chip is an Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) which combines the CPU and the GPU into one processor.
AMD Fusion Demo
I’ll get to what that means for you in a moment, but first I want to show you the picture from CES of the chart that Leslie Sobon, Corporate Vice President, Product & Outbound Marketing at AMD showed me.
This demo is showing you how AMD has taken these 3 processes of your computer which use 46 Watts…
and fused them into this one APU, the AMD Fusion, which uses 18 Watts. That saves you 28 Watts which means a lot less heat on your lap when you are using your notebook.
Fusion is Smaller, Faster, Cheaper
Great! What does that mean for you? It means that software and hardware developers are able to do more with less power which means smaller and faster laptops with longer battery life. All of this and cheaper in price, not quality.
- No more waiting for websites to load.
- Notebook and netbook batteries will last 6+ hours.
- Graphics software will run much faster on your computer.
- PCs will be smaller in both dimension and weight.
- Everything you do with video will be in HD quality.
I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of waiting for my computer processors to open software or process video. The computer should be waiting on me.
AMD Fusion’s Future
This changes what software and hardware developers are able to do with their products. The true potential of the AMD Fusion chip is yet to come.
I had an opportunity to see a few of the latest Fusion laptops at CES this past January. Very soon, I will have the opportunity to try it out myself and I will report back on everything I find. In my next AMD post, I will show you some of the latest products that are using the new Fusion chip.
Disclosure: I am a 2011 #AMDMom and I receive products and conference trips in exchange for working with AMD. All opinions are 100% my own.
Let’s Talk About AMD Fusion!
What do you use your computer for? Would having a faster, smaller and less expensive computer benefit you? What are your thoughts on the AMD Fusion?
