Fun Family Event: Hamster Derby at Petco

We do not have ham­sters and I have never been a big rodent fan, but I have to admit that watch­ing a ham­ster derby sounds like a lot of fun. My 6 year old son would go nuts watch­ing them roll around. I’m sure my 90 lb black lab would love it also, but we won’t go there.

This Sat­ur­day (Octo­ber 3) at 2 p.m. at a PETCO store near you, you can par­tic­i­pate in the Ham­ster Ball Derby. Last year more than 12,000 ham­sters entered their ball and raced down the eight-foot tracks in heats of four to get to the fin­ish line. And what did they get for their effort?

Win­ners at each store will receive the fol­low­ing prizes:

First-place:  A first-place medal and a Kay­tee Forti Diet Pro Health Small Ani­mal Starter Kit, com­plete with food, bed­ding, a treat and a chew
Second-place:  A second-place rib­bon and a Super Pet Ham­burger Crispy Combo Chew

Before the race begins, there will be a brief les­son from a PETCO Com­pan­ion Ani­mal Spe­cial­ist or store man­ager on how to keep your ham­ster healthy and happy. You’ll learn about the proper food to feed your ham­ster, the impor­tance of fresh water and exer­cise, toys and under­stand­ing a ham­sters noc­tur­nal nature.

With 1 dog and 2 cats in our house, we are always in need of pets sup­plies. I think we will try to sched­ule in pick­ing up some pet food (at 20% off) and have a lit­tle fun watch­ing the ham­sters roll around. Sounds like a fab­u­lous Sat­ur­day after­noon to me.
